June 8, 2007 — The University of Virginia will hold its community briefing in the Newcomb Hall Ballroom on Thursday, June 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s briefing, “A Greener Grounds,” focuses on the University’s environmental and sustainability efforts.
Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Leonard W. Sandridge will open the session with an overview of the University’s commitment to sustainability.
University Architect David J. Neuman will discuss the University’s sustainable practices in its planning efforts and Leadership on Energy and Environmental Design, a design standard the Board of Visitors has adopted and for which much of the new construction on Grounds will be certified.
Chief Facilities Officer Donald Sundgren will outline efforts to reduce energy and water consumption at the University. He will also discuss U.Va.’s recycling programs, for which the University received the Virginia Recycling Association’s Award for Excellence on May 2.
Rebecca White, director of U.Va.’s Department of Parking and Transportation, will discuss transportation demand management, which encourages U.Va. students, faculty and staff to use alternative modes of transportation such as walking, biking, carpooling or riding the bus.
The presentations will be followed with a question-and-answer period. Information on environmentally friendly initiatives from across Grounds will be displayed throughout the ballroom during the briefing.
The public and University employees are invited to attend. A complimentary light lunch will be served.
The briefing, coordinated by U.Va.’s Community Relations Office, is one of the ways the University works to share information with area residents.
