With spring now in full bloom on Grounds, the green expanse of the University of Virginia’s Carr’s Hill Field is a riot of activity. Players on the men’s Ultimate Frisbee club team race across the field after a soaring flying disc, their shouts echoing down Emmet Street as they run.

The 28-member team, dubbed “Night Train,” has existed under various names since 1978. Right now, the team is preparing for USA Ultimate’s Easterns tournament that begins Saturday in South Carolina. This is one of five spring tournaments that the club participates in and that count towards its national ranking. (There’s a fall season as well, but that time is used to develop rookie players and official results are not usually kept.)

As they prepare for their first matchup against the University of Pittsburgh on Saturday, UVA Today jumped on the field with the men of “Night Train” to learn more about the bonds of camaraderie and the addictive thrill of the chase that powers this team.
