(Commentary by Risa L. Goluboff, dean of the UVA School of Law) In January 1959, Sam Thompson entered the Liberty End Café in Louisville. While he waited to catch a bus nearby, he ordered macaroni and a beer and shuffled his feet to the music. Two police officers entered the bar and arrested Thompson for loitering. In short order, the local police court convicted Thompson, and not for the first time. Thompson had been arrested and convicted of loitering, vagrancy and other petty crimes more than 50 times, in part because he was poor and in part because he was black. Some of the particular...
Scientists at the UVA School of Medicine have found out how a cancer-causing virus anchors itself to human DNA. This discovery could help doctors cure incurable diseases by flushing such viruses out of the body, including human papillomavirus and Epstein-Barr.
A new look into the minutest details of virology may have unveiled the secret of how cancer-causing viruses such as humanpapilloma virus (HPV) anchor themselves in human genes, making it almost impossible to cure. The new look comes from a new microscopy technique developed by researchers from the UVA School of Medicine, according to the paper in the latest Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Officials are rolling out a program this summer that aims to persuade thousands of the state's 13 million annual tourists to move there and take jobs, an effort they say is crucial to Vermont’s economy. A recent UVA study predicted Vermont will lose 10 percent of its working-age population by 2040.

UVA scientists say women who store weight in their bellies may be genetically programmed to do that, and they could also be at increased risk for diabetes.
Most importantly, when we hear that “most” colleges don’t use class rank as a metric, it’s wise to remember that there are far more mediocre colleges than top-notch ones — so what “most” do is not necessarily what the best do. The fact is that the most prestigious colleges emphatically make an issue of what percentage of their incoming freshmen stand in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. Yes, Virginia, they do consider class rank. That is true of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology, Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, the Univers...

“When couples maintain their accounts separately, it’s indicative of a certain lack of trust, and a lack of commitment,” said UVA sociology professor W. Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project.
(Commentary by Kyle Kondik, political analyst at UVA’s Center for Politics) One might have done better in predicting the 2016 presidential election, or at least in anticipating the very close eventual outcome, by basing a projection of the national popular vote on the findings of several political science models released prior to the election. These models mostly made their predictions several months in advance of the election and were based on the incumbent’s approval rating, the economy and other “fundamental” factors.

“The short answer is that diversity trainings are filled with good intentions and poor evidence,” UVA researcher Brian Nosek said. “In terms of training in general, no matter what the topic, there’s very little evidence that it on its own can change behaviors that are usually what is of interest: reducing prejudice or bias that is unwanted. Implicit bias training is no different than that.”
Café Kuma is the epitome of free trade and self-determination, a university research project and a strike for social justice against an oligarchy of capitalist corporate coffee jobbers. That’s a lot of work for a little cup of coffee.

In West Virginia’s GOP Senate primary, candidate Don Blankenship is running on a different kind of record. The former CEO of Massey Energy served a one-year sentence, ending in May 2017, for conspiring to violate mine health and safety standards in connection with the nation’s deadliest coal mining explosion in decades. “Maybe I’m wrong, but I still think a conviction for murder would prevent someone’s election,” said Larry Sabato, director of UVA’s Center for Politics.
Boards owe it to the employees of their organizations to engage their corporate compliance and HR committees in a review and refresh of sexual harassment policies and investigative procedures, as well as diversity and inclusion programs. "A board ought to look at itself on an ongoing basis," said R. Edward Howell, a UVA professor of public health sciences. "When an executive is dismissed, that's a very appropriate time [for a board] to look at itself and ask, 'How are we doing? How are we setting the tone? Is it possible that the board had some failing that led to this misconduct or harassment...
In Iraq, Facebook is not just an adjunct to online life, it is online life. Up until recently, when YouTube started to compete, Facebook had a monopoly on Iraqi social media. But as a business, Facebook obviously has an agenda that is about more than just connecting people. Facebook’s “core functions are to deploy its algorithms to amplify content that generates strong emotional responses among its users and then convert what it learns about our interests and desires into targeted ads,” writes Siva Vaidhyanathan, director of UVA’s Center for Media and Citizenship. In Iraq, those strong em...
