Henry Theodore Northcott Graves was at the helm of family-owned Luray Caverns Corp. from 1952 to 2008 as the caverns grew into a popular tourist destination, with about 500,000 visitors a year. Mr. Graves died July 8 in a Winchester hospital. He was 87. … Mr. Graves earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia in 1949 and a few years later was at the helm of the family business.

A story several years ago on NPR's "All Things Considered" profiled a University of Virginia professor's new innovation to catch Internet cheaters — a search engine that can locate patterns of phrasing and match them to other works. The device has already turned up a number of cheaters not only in academia, but also in other areas of our lives.
Animal-law courses are now taught at many of the nation's leading law schools. Harvard Law School recently hosted a "Future of Animal Law" conference sponsored by the Animal Legal Defense Fund. A prime financial backer of the rise of animal law is Bob Barker, the longtime host of the game show The Price Is Right and a prominent animal-rights advocate. In his three years as president of George Washington University, Steven Knapp has tried nearly everything to bond with undergraduates. He moved onto campus, right across the street from a freshman dorm known for its party culture. He hired a graduate student to tell him which events to attend. He helped students haul their stuff into the dorms, created a Facebook account, danced at parties, judged a pie-eating contest and drummed with a basketball player. Still, many students thought he was boring and out of touch.
The UVA Center for Politics, founded by prolific UVA pundit Larry Sabato, received a $90,000 grant from The Comcast Foundation for the Center's Youth Leadership Initiative (YLI), according to a press release from the center. YLI develops free educational resources to promote interest among K-12 students in American politics and currently reaches approximately 50,000 teachers worldwide.
