State budget cuts may lead to layoffs at Piedmont Virginia Community College, officials said Wednesday. At UVa, officials are attempting to reduce spending without resorting to layoffs.
A recent survey posted on payscale.com found that the median income for recent graduates of Virginia Tech is $52,900 per year.  That is $700 more than its closest competitor, the University of Virginia. That’s right, Cavaliers: The Hokies got you beat.
The city of Norton school division is one of six school divisions in Virginia to receive federal grants intending to improve U.S. history instruction in the nation’s public schools. The school division will coordinate the project with the University of Virginia’s Center for Liberal Arts.

Volunteers are hauling boxes of medical supplies and loading bags of medicine. More than 200 volunteers are taking the University of Virginia Health System on the road. The RAM free clinic offers medical, dental, and vision care. Although the event may only last for thirty hours, it takes weeks of preparation to set up.

The search is officially on for a replacement for retiring UVA President John T. Casteen III. A special committee of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia will meet in August to begin its search for a successor to Casteen.
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute has received state approval. The certification by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia gives the Roanoke school degree-granting authority, and makes it eligible to apply for scholarship and grant funding. Its doctorate of medicine program received preliminary accreditation in June by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. The school, a partnership between Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic, expects its first class of 42 students to start in fall 2010, and graduate with a medical degree in the spring of 2014.
