But before that, he was helping change the lives of children at the University of Virginia. Even in death, Granata's friends say his impact is still being felt at the Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center in Charlottesville. There he used his knowledge about human motion to help people suffering from cerebral palsy.

By Donald Nuechterlein, lecturer in politics ...This story highlights one of America's knottiest foreign policy problems: how to respond to demands from nationalist groups around the world that desire to break their allegiance to larger states. Several examples are Tibet and China, Chechnya and Russia, Basque separatists and Spain. The dilemma arises over how to weigh America's historical support for self-determination by oppressed peoples against our need to maintain good relations with allies and major powers such as China and Russia. ...In retrospect, it was probably a mistake for the Europ...

Approaching the solemn anniversary of the shootings at Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia adopted a policy allowing notification to parents when a student is mentally ill and U.S. Sen. Jim Webb proposed legislation to remove further obstacles that might discourage such notifications. The state and nation are still dealing with the aftermath of the Tech killings, in which a deranged student murdered 32 faculty members and fellow students. One of the findings after the fact was that shooter Seung-Hui Cho had a history of mental health problems, but that information was not shared with tho...

...in the past year ... UVA has reexamined their security system, adding extra precautions to make sure students are as safe as possible. "There's nothing the schools could have really done about it. It could have happened anywhere," said Matt Ganyard, a first-year student. Around this time last year, faculty, students and staff would've been alerted to an emergency via email and the university website. Now, there are quite a few options to get the emergency information. "It really should be a choice. That's why we have redundancy of different types of communication," said Marge Sidebottom.
