The University of Virginia will join Virginia Tech and the Virginia Community College System in an educational and research partnership with British-based Rolls-Royce in the areas of engineering and business. The partnership is part of Rolls-Royce's plan to build a $100 million jet engine manufacturing plant in Prince George County, which was announced Tuesday by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine. The deal also brings UVa a new research center, renovated lab space and expanded undergraduate offerings, among other benefits.

Virginia's Chris Long has been named one of five finalists for the Nagurski Award. The award is given annually to the best defensive player in college football. Long ranks number one in the ACC with 12 sacks. He ranks second in the country in passes defended. Long is also a finalist for the Lombardi Award given to the top lineman in college football.

The debate over whether or not these sanctions will work has so far focused on economic considerations. Psychological and political factors, however, are more important. Historically, Iranian national sentiment soars in the face of foreign pressure. Like the leaders of the past, the current regime can benefit internally from resisting coercion by foreign powers such as the United States.
