College Board Tries to Police Use of 'Advanced Placement' Label

Sepsis is a life-threatening infection, especially when it strikes premature babies. By the time symptoms develop, the infant is already very sick. Now a new test may detect the infection almost before it starts. … Now, thanks to a breakthrough test, doctors may be able to spot sepsis in preemies before symptoms ever start. Researchers at the University of Virginia developed the test after studying the heart rates of premature infants.
The University of Virginia is going high tech when it comes to getting their message out. A new text message alert program is up and running to get emergency information to students and employees fast.
University of Virginia Health System volunteers once again will offer free medical care in Southwest Virginia this coming weekend. The 8th annual Remote Area Medical Clinic will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Virginia-Kentucky Fairgrounds in Wise.
You can expect a mid-morning delay a few days for the rest of this week on a section of Jefferson Park Avenue. JPA will be closed for one hour between Lee Street and West Main (above) Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The closing is from 10 to 11 a.m.
A report released last month by the Virginia Transportation Research Council, a joint project of the University of Virginia and the state department of transportation, finds that there are less invasive alternatives to speed cameras and speed bumps. The study focused on two innovations, LED stop signs and optical speed bars both of which were found to have "traffic calming" effects without any downside beyond the cost of implementation.
The panel investigating the April 16 massacre at Virginia Tech will hold its final public meeting today [at the Abbott Center Auditorium at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration] in Charlottesville. Convened by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, the eight-member panel is looking into all aspects of the shooting, in which gunman Seung Hui Cho killed 32 Tech students and faculty members before committing suicide.
Athletics Spending Questioned

Moody's Investors Service released a report Monday cautioning that spending on Division I athletics may or may not have a positive financial impact. While a 'carefully managed, successful' program can have 'a positive credit impact,' the analysts warned that 'most athletics programs typically require institutional subsidy from their universities in order to balance operations, making it difficult to determine over the long run if potential gains in institutional reputation are worth the financial outlay needed to support the programs.'
