Company Challenges Dominance of the Common Application, Pledging Access to Wider Applicant Pool
Chronicle of Higher Education / June 28
Over the past 30 years, the nonprofit company Common Application Inc. has been influential in streamlining the college-application process for millions of students. But its singular dominance in that market, with over 300 participating colleges, may change now that another company, ApplicationsOnline LLC, has introduced a competing product that has already won a baker's dozen clients, including Harvard and Princeton Universities.

There are some 400 state troopers, investigators, FBI and ATF agents trying to gather the threads left behind during the unraveling of Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho. More than two months into it, we're getting a diagnosis: Cho was a 'collector of injustice' - someone who blames everyone else for their problems. ... Usually the toll from these misguided missiles is smaller - one or two bodies, sometimes more. ... They share the same sad subplot: Runaway mental illness and its amazing cost to a society that screams for the best physical health care but whispers about a mental health care s...
Former UVa guard J.R. Reynolds is waiting to hear his name in Thursday's NBA draft. Reynolds will make the trip to New York City for the 2007 draft. Some experts said that Reynolds is a probable late second round pick. Other say he might not be drafted at all.
Thursday afternoon, at several spots around Charlottesville, people can get free and confidential HIV testing. It is part of National HIV Testing Day, where the theme is "Take the Test, Take Control." The testing is offered by the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department and UVA's Ryan White Program. The test is a mouth swab, and the results come back in just twenty minutes.
...UVa had plans to set-up an alert system to inform the university community of an emergency before the Virginia Tech shootings. ...However, after April 16th they took an even closer look and sped up the process to make sure they protect everyone on grounds. The alert system is called E-2 and it works like this: if an emergency occurred the same message will be sent to cell phones, email accounts, and flat screens across grounds.
Forty middle school students have been participating in a 10-day Governor's School adventure. But will their work float? At noon today, they will find out when students' reflective sculptures will be set afloat on the pond at the Dell at the University of Virginia. The pond is adjacent to the Curry School of Education on Emmet Street.
In the middle of summer, the University of Virginia's dormitories and fraternity houses lie mostly empty, waiting for a new batch of students to arrive in August. That leaves the buildings vulnerable to break-ins and vandalism, so officers from the Charlottesville and UVa police departments are keeping a close eye on those areas. UVa police reported 68 burglary cases during 2005, down from 92 the previous year.
The University of Virginia had a 13th place finish in the 2006-07 U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings. That's a yearly tally of America's best overall collegiate athletic programs. The Cavaliers racked up a total of 945 points this year. North Carolina and Duke were the only ACC rivals that achieved a higher finish than UVA. The Wahoos had the best showing among Virginia schools. While UVA was #13, Virginia Tech finished #48, Old Dominion was #80, and the College of William and Mary was #99.
So you've just gotten your bachelor's degree and are considering a master's in business administration. ...After looking at business schools, you have settled on the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. Darden, a top-ranked business school, offers in-state tuition breaks, but a Virginia resident entering in 2007 will pay a total of about $77,625 over the course of the two-year program in tuition and fees. But with large costs come large rewards. The average starting salary for Darden grads in 2006 was over $90,000.
