A Virginia Tech flag, a University of Virginia graduate and a relic from the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown are on board the shuttle Atlantis in a mission to the international space station. In the payload of the shuttle, which was launched Friday, was a Tech flag with a ribbon memorializing the 32 students and staff members killed April 16. Retired U.S. Army Col. Patrick Forrester, 50, a U-Va. graduate, was among the seven astronauts. Along for the ride was a nearly 400-year-old lead cargo tag reading "Yames Towne."

Richard Rorty, 75, an intellectual whose often deeply unconventional approach to mainstream philosophic thought brought him wide public recognition as one of the leading thinkers of his era, died June 8 at his home in Palo Alto, Calif. Hackers have been breaking into a University of Virginia database that included Social Security numbers and other personal information about faculty members over the past two years. School officials announced the security breaches yesterday, about a week after they discovered that, on 54 days between April 2005 and April 2007, someone broke into the records for more than 5,700 faculty members. UVa Athletic Director Craig Littlepage announced Sunday that the University and Head Baseball Coach Brian O'Connor have agreed to a three-year contract extension. The new contract keeps him in Cavalier orange and blue through the 2012 season. ...Just three days ago, there were rumors out of Gainesville, Florida that O'Connor was a candidate for the Gators head coaching job. ...Through four seasons, O'Connor is 177-66 at Virginia, and is the quickest coach in school history to 100 wins.
