A worker was injured in a construction accident Thursday afternoon at a UVA Medical Center site. Authorities say a 600-pound panel fell on the worker at the MR-6 construction area on Lane Road. Charlottesville Deputy Fire Chief Britt Grimm says the victim was not trapped and rescuers reached him without any problems. Grimm says the victim was awake when he was taken to the hospital. Initial reports indicate the worker suffered leg injuries.
The University of Virginia now expects to enlarge the proposed structure that will house its adult cancer patients. The Finance Committee of the Board of Visitors learned Thursday that a fifth floor will be added to the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center. That will make this a project with a price tag of $40,300,000.
NEWPORT NEWS -- Riverside Health System announced today that its radiosurgery center, a joint venture with the University of Virginia and located at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, now has the capability to treat cancer tumors on the body more precisely through radiation.
The University of Virginia expects to begin the next fiscal year with a nearly $2.1 billion budget. UVA Vice-President for Management and Budget Colette Sheehy told the Board of Visitors Finance Committee Thursday that the figure represents a 6.7% increase over the current budget. Sheehy reminded the Board about its goal of making faculty salaries competitive. She says the University has been able to climb in the rankings of faculty pay among peer schools.
The University of Virginia is replacing its antiquated student technology system, known as ISIS, over the next two years with a new system that officials expect to cost $51.2 million. The current system has frustrated students, who found registration for classes to be a very difficult process. The system will be scrapped and replaced by the PeopleSoft Campus Solutions student information system to be purchased from Oracle, said Leonard W. Sandridge, UVa's executive vice president and chief operating officer.

The University of Virginia Art Museum will open a special exhibit Saturday featuring work of Mesoamerican artists. "In the Land of the Corn God: Mesoamerican Art from the Collection," which runs through Aug. 5, includes works in the collection representing the Olmec, Zapotec, Teotihuacan, Maya, Mixtec, Huastec Pipil, Totonac, Toltec, Tarascan and Aztec civilizations from central Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Virginia's Sean Singletary still has 12 days left to decide whether he will take his name out of consideration for the NBA Draft and return to UVA for his senior year. An espn.com report says Singletary did not have a good showing at last weekend's NBA pre-draft camp in Orlando. The report says right now Singletary is likely a second round pick. That's important to note because players chosen in the first round of the NBA Draft are guaranteed 4-year multi-million dollar contracts. Second round picks aren't guaranteed anything and have to fight for roster spots.
