"Shoot Out for Cancer" is an annual fundraiser organized by UVa's Student Athlete Mentors (SAMs). It is a spring picnic that gives the youth of Charlottesville a chance to compete with their favorite student athletes. There are obstacle courses, autograph signing, a silent auction for adults and a lunch. All the money raised goes to the Jennifer Fund.
Students at UVa are reaching out to Virginia Tech in yet another way. They set up a memorial wall where students can write messages to the Virginia Tech campus. Many students on grounds say they've been personally affected by Monday's shooting and say that this writing wall is a way for them to relieve some of their pain, sadness and frustration.
Whether you're gay or straight, black or white, one group on UVA Grounds says everyone is hurt by unfair stereotypes. To help break down these barriers, the group "Sustained Dialogue" got 1,500 students to wear t-shirts Monday with "Stereotype Me" on the front. On the back, the students describe themselves in their own words.
A UVA professor has developed a virtual experimentation web site. Professor John Bean says the site allows visitors to take apart and reconstruct microelectronic and nanotechnology items. Bean says the site is used by over 300 American universities and 400 foreign schools.
A few weeks after the University of Virginia wraps up the current academic year, some Wahoos will participate in the Semester at Sea. UVA Spanish professor David Gies is looking forward to June 17th, and voyages to Central and South America. The itinerary includes nations that border both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
A veteran political reporter believes it was somewhat unusual for Governor Tim Kaine to set up a commission to investigate the recent carnage at Virginia Tech, and then decide against naming any members of the General Assembly. There are no elected officials on that eight-member panel, but there are two people with local ties. One is Dr. Marcus Martin of the UVA Medical School. Another is 1973 UVA Law School graduate Diane Strickland, who's a former Circuit Judge in the Roanoke area.

In the events of last week, an important university event from the previous week was overshadowed. The University of Virginia announced receipt of a gift of $100 million, to be used to found a new graduate school. The gift from retired media executive Frank Batten Sr. is the largest in the university's history, and the planned Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy is the first new school since the Darden Graduate School of Business...
Alternative therapy for cancer treatment is becoming more popular at hospitals around the country, including UVa Medical Center. The program is only two years old, but already patients are taking advantage of some of the alternative practices including hypnosis, massage therapy and acupuncture.
[...] Catching students who might otherwise slip through the cracks is, in fact, a pretty accurate job description of the work done by Ms. Grimm and 21 other advisers who are part of the University of Virginia's College Guide Program. Under the program, the guides, who are all recent UVa graduates, are deployed to high schools throughout the state, where they help students, many of whom will be the first in their families to go to college, prepare for standardized tests, apply for financial aid, and plot a career path.
Women and Men in Women's Sports
Inside Higher Education / April 23
Men suited up to play ball with women at about two-thirds of Division I institutions in 2005-6, although only one [or] two universities across the National Collegiate Athletic Association's three divisions said they recruited fewer female players or provided fewer scholarships because men practiced with women, according to new survey data on the use of male 'practice players' released by the NCAA last week.
