Zaha Hadid, whose emotive, painterly approach to design and spatially complex buildings rattled the foundation of Modernism, has been named the 2007 recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation medal in Architecture. To be presented on April 13 at the University of Virginia, the medal is awarded for notable achievement in design or for distinguished contributions to the architecture field.
Congratulation's to UVA's Somdev Devvarman. He has been named the ACC Player of the Week. It is the 4th time Devvarman has received the award this season. Devvarman is a big reason why the Cavalier men's tennis team completed the regular season with a perfect 11-0 record. The 'Hoos are the #1 seed for this weekend's ACC Tournament.
The rivalry between the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech is one often fought with a wink, a playful nudge or a joke shared over the kitchen table. But as news of Monday's tragic shootings on the Virginia Tech campus was broadcast throughout the world, all evidence of that rivalry seemed to melt away.
...At colleges nationwide, students are coming to grips with the meaning and scale of Monday's shooting. But few campuses have been as directly affected as UVa's. Randa Samaha, a third-year student from Centreville, lost her sister Reema, a Virginia Tech freshman. The first cousin of another UVa student was also killed, UVa President John T. Casteen III said during a candlelight vigil Tuesday. Countless other UVa students have a personal connection to the tragedy, with friends or siblings attending Virginia Tech.
Students at the University of Virginia have found another way to express their sorrow for Monday's tragic events at Virginia Tech with messages of grief and hope. All day Wednesday, students stopped at a wall near Newcomb Hall at UVA to share their thoughts and prayers. Messages like "our thoughts and prayers are with you" and "love is the only thing that helps" adorn the wall. Thursday, students will meet on the Lawn at 4:30 p.m. to write letters to Virginia Tech students and their families.
Two women. One is a doctor, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at UVA, and the director of remote area medical program. The other is a fourth year medical student at the school. Both women went on a mission to save women from cervical cancer thousands of miles away. In this week's sunrise standout we took a look at their trip to Guyana, in their words, and pictures.
Support continues not only across Grounds but also across the nation as one UVA student is showing through his efforts. Dustin Lapradd says he has not slept in 48 hours and has been constantly on the phone and online. He authored a Facebook webpage to help organize support for Virginia Tech on Grounds. In the last 48 hours, thousands of virtual friends from all over the nation and beyond are reaching out. ...Lapradd's next goal is to work with Governor Kaine's office to designate a state holiday in commemoration of the Tech tragedy.
The University of Virginia's President wants to make the Grounds a safer place. John Casteen has shared several ideas with current UVA students. Casteen wants a warning system including text messages, and E-mails that contain information for students' protection. UVA will welcome its Class of 2011 in late August, and Casteen expects to have new procedures by then.
College Risk Managers Weigh the Benefits of Emergency Notification, Other Security Measures Chronicle of Higher Education / April 18 […] Over the past few decades, violence, natural disasters, and other crises on college campuses have spurred new security measures, like swipe cards for building entrances, emergency telephone and lighting systems, and evacuation procedures. In response to the Virginia Tech tragedy, some experts wondered whether, for example, campuswide public-address systems, which few institutions now have, might become more common. http://tinyurl.com/3422an New Phon...

Spotsylvania County residents with commercial driver's licenses who take their work vehicles home with them may be prohibited from parking in most county subdivisions. ...The study, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Transportation and the University of Virginia, found that if no new parking spaces are provided and a 5 percent increase in truck travel is assumed, the deficiency on I-95 could be as high as 40 percent by 2010.
We should be invigorated by the longer hours of sunshine and warmer temperatures. But somehow, after a few months of "resting," many of us are more fatigued than ever. That doesn't seem to make sense, but a new study by the University of Virginia has found overwhelming evidence that regular exercise can play a significant role in reducing fatigue.
...On April 12, Ralph Nader gave his lecture, 'While You Were Watching Big Brother, Big Brother Was Watching You' to hundreds of UVA students and community members. Standing before 'The School of Athens' in Old Cabell Hall, Nader contrasted 'growing up civic' to 'growing up corporate.' He quoted Cicero's definition of freedom as 'participation in power.' 'Politicians talk about personal freedom,' said Nader. 'You can buy anything and travel anywhere you want. But that's not liberty.'
