[...] The signing-deaf community is one of the most welcoming places I have encountered (I am late-deafened): It is open to any person with a significant hearing loss who learns to sign and respects deaf values (which prominently include the preservation of sign language). It is heterogenous, and its boundaries are contested, but isn't that true of all minority groups?

Congratulations to Virginia's Monica Wright. She has been voted the ACC Rookie of the Year. The honor is no surprise: she won the rookie of the week award eight times this season. Wright is averaging 15 points per game and leads the team in steals.
It is no surprise that much of the housing on Jefferson Park Avenue and Wertland Street is student housing. Well, now the UVa Student Council wants to create a community watch program to make those areas just a bit safer.

A bill awaiting the signature of Gov. Timothy M. Kaine would direct the state's auditor not to post on its public Web site any financial data related to the University of Virginia's endowment funds. The auditor's Web site features a searchable database called "Commonwealth Data Point" designed to make public money more transparent...[Walter J. Kucharski, auditor of public accounts] said the information itself remains public; it simply wouldn't be posted online.
It's almost as if Virginia Tech and UVa can't allow one to commit news without the other having to plan its own gambit for newsprint. Both my alma maters recently ended campus combat about their honor systems. Many observers wondered why the first took place. The second was instigated by a group of people who likely chose the wrong university, and want to make up for their indiscretion by forcing Mr. Jefferson's venerable school to rip out its soul.
