(By Emily Temple, associate editor of Literary Hub, who has a Master of Fine Arts degree from UVA.) Faulkner served as Writer-in-Residence at the University of Virginia in 1957 and 1958, and some of his pedagogical conversations with students there have since been made public.
Bipartisan legislation to make it harder for President Trump to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller ran into legal hurdles Tuesday at the Senate Judiciary Committee. Akhil Reed Amar, a professor at Yale Law School and a Democrat, informed the committee that its attempt to clip Trump’s wings would not stand up in court. He was joined by John Duffy, a UVA School of Law professor, who also flagged constitutional concerns about the legislation.
The RealClearPolitics average showed Moore in the lead before the race results were in, and ahead in all four of the most recent polls. Trump first endorsed Strange in August ahead of the initial primary race. But as Geoffrey Skelley of UVA’s Center for Politics noted in an email, “Strange only won 33 percent in the primary, one of the worst incumbent primary performances ever.”
The anticipated release of thousands of never-before-seen government documents related to President John F. Kennedy’s assassination has scholars and armchair detectives buzzing. Now, they’re waiting to see whether President Trump will block the release of files that could shed light on a tragedy that has stirred conspiracy theories for decades. “The American public deserves to know the facts, or at least they deserve to know what the government has kept hidden from them for all these years,” said Larry Sabato, director of UVA’s Center for Politics and author of a book about Kennedy.
"A little bit of modeling and practice is doubtless going to be helpful, but there's an upper limit," said Daniel Willingham, a UVA cognitive scientist and professor of psychology. "The job titles may not exist yet, but in 2020, people are still going to need to do mathematics, to be able to read. The cognitive processes that go into those jobs are probably not that different than what we are looking at today."
Celebrating its 30th year, the Virginia Film Festival announced a star-studded line-up featuring big names and more than 150 shows on the program for November 9-12. Actor William Macy, perhaps best known for his role in "Fargo," will present his new film "Krystal," about a man who attends AA meetings in order to get close to a woman.
Emmy Award-winning actor William H. Macy, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ezra Edelman and author Margot Lee Shetterly are among the guests coming to Charlottesville for the 30th Virginia Film Festival, joining previously announced guest Spike Lee. “We still believe that it’s very topical and current,” said Jody Kielbasa, the festival’s director and the University of Virginia’s vice provost for the arts. “We feel this is important and something the film festival can do to respond to national events.”
Breast cancer patients who take opioid painkillers are more likely to discontinue an important hormone treatment that helps ensure their survival, researchers report. "It's not a big secret that the U.S. uses more opioids than any other country in the world," said researcher Rajesh Balkrishnan of the UVA School of Medicine's Department of Public Health Sciences. "Clearly there has to be better management of opioids in the elderly cancer population."
The University of Virginia will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the cornerstone laying on Oct. 6 with a star-studded Bicentennial Launch Celebration. The event will host a spectacle of more than 900 performers and 20,000 guests on the campus's historic Lawn.
UVA has renamed a medical research building to honor Dr. Vivian Pinn. Dr. Pinn was the only woman and the only African American in the 1967 graduating class at the School of Medicine.
In the next five to 10 years, experts say we’ll be seeing driverless cars on our roads and highways. It’s likely to change the face of our cities, according to Louis Nelson, UVA’s associate provost for academic outreach.

When it comes to the first President, watch out for quotations that are a little too colloquial. “An army of jackasses led by a lion is stronger than an army of lions led by a jackass” is a quote that often gets misattributed to George Washington. "If you see something profane or flippant, it’s highly unlikely he said it," says William Ferraro, managing editor and acting editor-in-chief of The Papers of George Washington at the University of Virginia. "He was very conscious about the fact that he wasn’t college-educated or formally or classically trained, so he took great pains through his rea...
"Adding North Korea and Venezuela provides some cover. It makes it look less like it was just aimed at Muslims," Douglas Laycock, a law professor specializing in religion at the UVA Law School, said. But because of the small numbers affected, he said, "the cover is looking very thin."
Besides President Trump, health care, education and law and order, there are still plenty of key issues that could sway Virginia voters one way or the other. Geoffrey Skelley, a political analyst at UVA’s Center for Politics, believes the Confederate statue debate could be an issue Virginia voters take with them to the polls.
A newly discovered dwarf galaxy with a limited oxygen supply may offer astronomers new insights in the formation and evolution of the early universe. "We found that a considerable fraction of the stellar mass of the galaxy was formed only a few million years ago, making this one of the best counterparts we've found of primordial galaxies," Trinh Thuan, an astronomer at the University of Virginia, said in a news release. "Because of its extremely low oxygen level, this galaxy serves as an accessible proxy for star-forming galaxies that came together within one to two billion years after the Big...
