October 14, 2009 — The University of Virginia will hold its annual Fall Convocation Friday, Oct. 16, at 2 p.m. in the John Paul Jones Arena. The keynote address will be given by Meredith Jung-En Woo, the Buckner W. Clay Dean of Arts & Sciences.
The ceremony includes the awarding of Intermediate Honors to the top 20 percent of students who have completed at least 60 hours of course work at the University in their first two years.
Two people will receive the Thomas Jefferson Award, the highest honor given to members of the University community. One award, to recognize excellence in service to the University, has been sponsored by the Robert Earll McConnell Foundation since 1955. A second award, newly established this year by the Alumni Board of Trustees of the University of Virginia Endowment Fund, Inc., will recognize excellence in scholarship.
Woo, who became dean in 2008, is an expert in East Asian politics and the international political economy. She came to U.Va. from the University of Michigan, where she had been associate dean for social sciences at the College of Literature, Science and Arts. She was also a political science professor at Michigan and taught at Northwestern University.
She has worked as a consultant for the World Bank, the United States Trade Representative, the Asian Development Bank Institute, the Asia Foundation and the MacArthur Foundation. President Clinton appointed her to the Presidential Commission on U.S.-Pacific Trade and Investment Policy.
She has written or edited several books. Her most recent is "Neoliberalism and Reform in East Asia," joining "Past as Prelude: History in the Making of the New World Order" and "Race to the Swift: State and Finance in Korean Industrialization."
The convocation traditionally kicks off Family Weekend.
