December 21, 2009 — The University of Virginia is slowly returning to normal operations following the record weekend snowfall of 20.5 inches.
On Tuesday, all employees – in the Academic Division and Health System – are expected to report. A grace period of up to two hours is allowed those with extreme travel issues. Managers are asked to be flexible with employees who believe that it is not safe for them to travel.
Many outlying roads are packed with snow and ice, and intersections are clogged with abandoned and stuck cars. Route 52 remained closed Monday between Route 729 and the Fluvanna County line, but officials hoped to have the road open by Monday evening.
Outpatient clinics at the U.Va. Medical Center will open at 9 a.m. Tuesday, except for the outpatient infusion clinic, which will open at the usual time. Patients should call ahead to verify appointments.
On Monday evening, the Medical Center resumed its normal staffing schedules. About 200 employees had stayed at the hospital or in nearby hotels since Friday night. Hospital employees who need transportation should consult the Health System ride board.
On Tuesday, the Aquatic and Fitness Center, which served as a shelter over the weekend, will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Memorial Gymnasium and North Grounds Recreation Center will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
