April 28, 2011 — The University of Virginia has been included in the 2011 edition of "The Princeton Review's Guide to 311 Green Colleges." To compile the guide, Princeton Review and the U.S. Green Building Council teamed for the second year to profile 308 institutions of higher education in the United States and three in Canada that demonstrate notable commitments to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation.
U.Va., which received an overall score of 92 out of 100, was praised for its early commitment, in 1991, to the Talloires Declaration, a 10-point action plan for incorporating sustainability and environmental literacy in teaching, research, operations and outreach at colleges and universities.
The guide also cited U.Va.'s commitment in 2007 to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – or LEED – standards for all new construction, its energy- and water-saving initiatives, its 2008 carbon emissions plan, and local and/or organic food purchases for the school dining halls.
