In Memoriam: William Verner Daniel

William Verner Daniel, who was a 1950 alumnus of the University of Virginia and served on several University-related boards, died July 4. He was 81.

A retired Richmond banker, Daniel was a former member of the Board of Managers of the U.Va. Alumni Association.

In 1988, President Robert O'Neil named him to head the newly formed Fraternity Alumni Council, and President John T. Casteen III later appointed him to the ad hoc Committee on the Future of Fraternities and Sororities. He was a founding member of the Historical Renovation Corporation, established to facilitate the restoration of fraternity houses at the University.

An alumni advisor for over 40 years to the St. Elmo Hall fraternity at the University, he provided continuity and guidance to generations of undergraduates, oversaw two major renovations and raised funds to permanently endow the fraternity house. At the 100th anniversary of St. Elmo Hall, its back courtyard was permanently dedicated in his name.

In addition, the Seven Society and Casteen recognized him with proclamations for his significant service to the University.
