June 9, 2010 — Last weekend's 26th annual University of Virginia Children's Hospital Telethon raised $1,357,747, which will help fund the soon-to-be built Barry and Bill Battle Building, pediatric research and special comforts for hospitalized children.

While the tradition of telling endearing stories that show the skill, care and dedication of staff at the U.Va. Children's Hospital remained the same, there were some fun surprises.
 
Mike London, head coach of the U.Va. football team, paid a visit to the set to encourage the community to give. About a decade ago, London's daughter survived a rare blood disorder after receiving her father's bone marrow. Charlie the Bear showed viewers how he brings delight to sick children in the hospital. And Angell Husted, longtime host of the U.Va. Children's Hospital Telethon, surprised viewers and telethon coordinators with a dazzling red gown, a departure from the signature gold sequined gown from telethons past.  
 
Last week, a reception and award ceremony for pediatric researchers recognized the accomplishments of investigators. Dr. Robert L. Chevalier, outgoing chair of the Department of Pediatrics at U.Va. Children's Hospital, was honored for his years of leadership during the reception and again during the telethon. Also highlighted were the volunteer and fundraising efforts that take place throughout the year.
