October 15, 2008 — Unique musical experiences — both live and on-air — are on tap as WTJU 91.1 FM, the University of Virginia's jazz, classical and public affairs station, launches its fall fund drive.
To get the fund drive rolling, four local bands will take the stage at 7 p.m. Oct. 23 at Belrio, a new club at 407C Monticello Road in Charlottesville's Belmont neighborhood.
The cozy Belrio, which took over the space once occupied by the Saxx Jazz and Blues Lounge, will play host to the irreverent razzmatazz of the Acme Swing Manufacturing Company, as well as veteran local acts, the Jim Howe Quintet and Fish Fry, which features blues guitarists Mike D’Antoni and Lawrence Verga.
The soulful anchor of the evening will be Charlottesville legend George Melvin with his beloved B3 organ, Miss Lucy. “George Melvin is an absolute treasure,” WTJU jazz director David Eisenman said. “With him stirring the pot, the joint should be jumping.”
Following Thursday’s live event, WTJU will begin the on-air portion of its fall fund drive, with local volunteer DJs digging deep into their own music knowledge and experience to create special programming that will run from Oct. 24 through Nov. 2.
The Classical Department will take center stage first, beginning at 6 a.m. on Oct. 24, bringing five days of uninterrupted classical music -- from chamber music to great symphonies, from early music to 21st century compositions, from opera to solo vocalists.
The jazz portion of the fund drive will begin Oct. 28 with Miles Davis’ eclectic electric period and end on Nov. 2 with African music from the 1950s.
Thanks to the generous support of listeners, WTJU has for the last 51 years been broadcasting classics alongside cutting-edge new music, as well as community announcements and music calendars.
"The staff and volunteers are dedicated to broadcasting the most distinct and enriching programs, but we depend on donors for vital financial support," general manager Chuck Taylor said. The fund-raising goal is $50,000.
