July 22, 2008 — "CavPool," a package of incentives to encourage University of Virginia employees to share rides in order to reduce commuting costs as well as environmental impact, is being implemented this month by U.Va.'s Department of Parking and Transportation.
"We are keenly aware of the impact that rising gasoline prices are having on our employees and are adding this program to other initiatives to help ease the situation," said Rebecca White, director of P&T.
"While those who live near either a Charlottesville Transit Service or University Transit Service bus line have a no-cost option for commuting, the incentives that CavPool offers should make carpools or vanpools a more attractive option for all employees."
Offered through P&T’s Transportation Demand Management Program, Cavalier Carpool Program incentives include reduced permit rates, access to free occasional parking permits, a free guaranteed ride home when needed and preferred parking assignments.
For instance, carpools with two riders will receive a 10 percent discount on parking permits along with six occasional parker permits during a six-month period and entry into quarterly and annual rewards drawings. At the high end of the incentive program, pools that have five or more riders get free parking in an assigned space, eight occasional parking permits, and each rider is entered in the rewards drawing three times.
All participants in CavPool will receive the emergency ride home benefit administered through RideShare. The program receives federal funding to provide five cab ride vouchers per year to those who use alternative transportation for their commute to work.
All participants in CavPool must be U.Va. employees or contract/foundation employees who work on Grounds. Riders may not possess any other U.Va. day-time permit. Applicants are subject to verification of home address, shift and other pertinent information.
