U.Va. Art Museum Announces Winners of 2008 Annual 'Flowers Interpret Art' Competition

Judges looking at a flower arrangement

Flowers Interpret Art

April 29, 2008 — Each year during Garden Week, the University of Virginia Art Museum invites area garden club members and residents to create flower arrangements inspired by works of art on view in the museum.

This year, "Flowers Interpret Art" participants interpreted sections of Jan Van Kessel's "Still Life with Fruit and Monkey" (c. 1650). An enigmatic monkey, an overturned porcelain bowl and a bounty of fruits and foliage provided fodder for creative interpretation.

Submissions were judged for best interpretation and most creative. Visitors were also invited to vote for their favorite entry.

This year's winners are:

Most Creative: Carolyn Brandt and Jan van Kessel, "Still Life with Fruit and Monkey," detail No. 3.

Best Interpretation: Elaine Gardner and Ya Chen Wang, untitled (Grosbeak Perching on Blooming Plum)

My Favorite (voting by visitors): Pat Fray and Tang Yin, "Two Ladies in the Garden."

"Flowers Interpret Art" is an annual event organized by the Museum's Volunteer Guild.
