$100,000 for graduate business education
January 8, 2008 — Evelyn Y. Davis, the nationally known shareholder advocate, and the Evelyn Y. Davis Foundation have made a $100,000 gift to support students in the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration.
"We are most grateful that Evelyn Y. Davis has selected the University of Virginia as a recipient of her generous support for students studying in the Darden School," said U.Va. President John T. Casteen III. "In challenging students and pushing them to ask difficult questions – to do what she has done for many years as a shareholder advocate -- Mrs. Davis adds value to education here."
Davis is the founder of Highlights and Lowlights, a financial newsletter that covers topics such as corporate governance, executive compensation and shareholder rights. She has lectured on corporate governance issues at universities around the country, including at the Darden School, where she has been a visiting lecturer.
"The gift by Evelyn Davis will support access by talented students to the Darden School," said Robert F. Bruner, Darden's dean. "This is consistent with the work of Mrs. Davis, to open the institutions of the business world to fresh ideas and new talent. We thank her for her visionary support."
In recognition of the gift, U.Va. is installing a plaque to be displayed in perpetuity in the main student and visitor entrance to Newcomb Hall, the student center located on the University's central Grounds.
Davis is a shareholder in more than 80 corporations and has been attending shareholder meetings since 1960. She began her investment career with securities inherited from her father.
Her foundation, established in 1989, makes grants to nationally prominent universities, arts organizations, and hospitals.
