A rock music-fueled Broadway sensation about young love in the wake of repression may seem like a recent phenomenon, but it’s actually an adaptation of a play written in 1892. The University of Virginia Department of Drama’s production of “Spring Awakening” opened Thursday at UVa’s Culbreth Theatre. Based on Frank Wedekind’s 1892 play, the musical uses, pop, rock and folk to help tell the tale of German teens discovering their sexuality.
