On Friday and Saturday, Charlottesville was near the center of a massive snowstorm that crawled up the East Coast and dumped tremendous amounts of snow across the region.
The University of Virginia’s McCormick Observatory tallied 14.7 inches of snow as of Saturday afternoon, making this among the largest snowstorms ever in the 122 years of records there. The Charlottesville airport recorded over 18 inches.
The University canceled classes Friday, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t any activity. A team of Facilities Management employees worked around the clock to keep Grounds safe, clearing roadways and walkways.

Students were also out in force. The men’s rowing team built an igloo near new dorms, the dogs of UVA were out in force, and there was a midnight snowball fight on the Lawn.
