Fallen Trees, Faulty Backup Switch To Blame for Network Outage

A power outage caused by fallen trees disrupted network connectivity across the University of Virginia overnight Sunday and into Monday.

The outage affected a UVA data center, temporarily knocking out Wi-Fi service and disabling access to some applications that require NetBadge authentication. Those include Workday, Collab, the Student Information System, UVABox and other applications.

Officials said UVA has ample backup generators in place, but in this case, a switch designed to automatically transfer services to the generator backup malfunctioned. After identifying and analyzing the problem, and troubleshooting a number of complex issues, UVA workers manually transferred service to the backup and began restoring power to various pieces of equipment.

Service to many functions was fully restored by 11:30 a.m. Monday, while work on others continued into the afternoon. By early afternoon, services were shifted back to their normal power source.
