The University of Virginia’s Rotunda is undoubtedly the most photographed building on Grounds, so it’s hard for photographers to create a fresh take on a centuries-old landmark.
University Communications’ photographer and drone pilot Mitch Powers, assisted by intern Solomon Goluboff-Schragger, recently took up that challenge. Powers hovered a drone over the building, kept the drone camera’s shutter open for a few seconds, and then slowly flew the drone backward.
The pair made several attempts over several nights until the light was perfect and the drone track precise. The result is a sharp image of the Rotunda’s dome with fascinating light trails emanating from the building.
