Every fall, the University of Virginia’s beloved Pratt ginkgo puts on a show. Long after most trees have dropped their leaves, this beauty hangs onto its soft green canopy until, almost overnight, it erupts into a brilliant shade of gold.

This year, University Communications photographers Matt Riley and Lathan Goumas followed the tree through its annual transformation, from the first hints of yellow to its stunning peak and final golden fall. Their photos capture the anticipation, the color and the quiet magic that make the Pratt ginkgo’s autumn display one of UVA’s favorite fall traditions.
