One of the biggest things about donating in your own community is you get to see what's happening with those dollars. So, folks who might choose to donate to Cultivate Charlottesville can see the city gardens at the different schools. You can drive by on West Street and see what's growing there.
Cultivate Charlottesville is a local nonprofit, and we're focused on food justice. We believe that food is a human right. And we actually are working on systems change, looking at ways that we can make Charlottesville more food equitable.
A lot of times people concentrate on just the food itself. There's so many intersecting areas — education, transportation, community wealth building, climate. All of the work that we do is possible because we get donations from local partners, but also from local neighbors. We love that there's this Give Where You Live campaign that's encouraging folks to look at the nonprofits in their own backyards and give dollars right here.
Connor Gillespie, Wildlife Center of Virginia Outreach Supervisor
Give Where You Live is important because you're making a huge impact right in your backyard. Every animal that we release, there is someone who has never seen that animal, doesn't know what's going on with them, but has donated to give it a second chance.
Emma Winstead, Wildlife Center of Virginia Intern Veterinarian
As a wildlife veterinarian, every day is wildly different depending on what walks through the doors. Today, we looked at a snake that was caught in netting, a box turtle with a large wound on its neck, a goose with an injured wing. We are entirely funded by private donations. We do not receive state funding. And we could not do any of the work that we do on a daily basis without donations like the Give Where You Live campaign.

Knowing that what you're doing is going to have an impact on your neighborhood and/or your neighbors is a big reason to give money back to the community. One of the things we see about UVA is they want to give back. They're from the community. They are of the community. Or they've made the community their home, and they want to make the entire community better.
