Batson co-founded UVA’s Department of Computer Science in the mid-1960s. Fifty years later, the program is the largest and highest-ranked of its kind in Virginia.
The changes include renaming a school, contextualizing Jefferson’s statue, removing the George Rogers Clark statue, rededicating or removing the Whispering Wall and renaming a Law School building.
The Board endorsed commitments to double the number of underrepresented faculty by 2030, review tenure and promotion processes and support a more racially and socioeconomically diverse student population, among other goals.

The UVA School of Nursing has received a $5 million gift from the Pew Charitable Trusts to create the Rebecca W. Rimel Dean’s Chair. The endowed chair honors Rimel, a 1973 graduate of the school and Pew’s longtime president and CEO.
