May 7, 2008 — As University of Virginia students prepare to depart at the end of the regular academic year, many must decide what to do with the "stuff" they don't want to take with them. The University offers options for both off-Grounds and on-Grounds residents.
The Sofa Shuffle, U.Va.'s off-Grounds furniture donation drive, encourages departing U.Va. students to donate unwanted furniture and household items in support of low-income area residents.
On May 10, 19, 24 and 31, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, Salvation Army collection trucks will be located at five locations to collect donated items:
• 780 Madison Avenue;
• 516 Brandon Avenue;
• Jefferson Park Avenue at Maywood Lane;
• 14th Street at Camden Plaza;
• and University Circle at Rugby and Raleigh Court Apartments.
The Sofa Shuffle is sponsored by U.Va.'s Community Relations Office, the Office of Off-Grounds Housing, the Blue Ridge Apartment Council and the Salvation Army.
For information, contact event organizer Sadie Simmons at 924-3165 or e-mail scs6k@virginia.edu. Information is also available at www.virginia.edu/communityrelations/sofashuffle.html.
On-Grounds students may contribute their cast-offs to Chuck it for Charity, which collects fans, electronics, furniture, microwaves, clothing, household supplies, non-perishable food and other reusable items to donate to local charities.
Chuck it for Charity collections, which are under way now through May 13, take place in:
• the lounges of the McCormick Road and Alderman Road residence halls
• the Malone and Weedon houses lounges in Hereford Residential College
• the Gooch/Dillard lounges at the Stadium Road residence area
• the Tucker kitchen at Brown Residential College
• the Gwathmey Game Room at the International Residence College
• the computer lab in Building 836 at the Copeley Residence Area
• basement lounge at Bice Hall
• Younger Computer Lab at the Faulkner Residence Area
• the Commons Assembly Room at Lambeth Field Residence Area.
