The 2019 College Cup came down to penalty kicks on Sunday night as the University of Virginia men’s soccer team took Georgetown University to a 3-3 tie in regulation and through two scoreless overtime periods.

It took seven rounds of penalty kicks to break the tie with a save from Georgetown’s keeper.

Despite the loss, the Hoos have a lot to be proud of, as they put together a 21-2-1 season, won the ACC Championship, earned the College Cup’s top seed and advanced to the finals after defeating Wake Forest University 2-1 on Friday night.

The championship weekend added to a stellar calendar year for UVA Athletics. At one point in October, the Cavalier men’s and women’s soccer teams were simultaneously ranked No. 1 for the first time in school history.

UVA’s men’s basketball and lacrosse teams both captured national titles this year, bringing the University’s total to 27 across all sports. Several other squads have made deep postseason runs, including the football team’s first-ever berth in the Capital One Orange Bowl coming up Dec. 30.
