For several years, Samantha Shoemaker, left, and Taylor Burton, radiologic technologists in the Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging, have volunteered to take X-rays at UVA football games.

An estimated 1,300 volunteers from the University and the community signed up for this year’s Day of Caring, more than doubling last year’s total.

First-year student Jason Morefield, who has been playing chess competitively since he was 9, defeated a grandmaster-elect to win the Virginia Closed State Chess Championships over Labor Day weekend.
