Oh là là! Several Hoos are in the international spotlight as the first weekend of competition gets underway in Paris at the Summer Olympics.

Due to the six-hour time difference between the U.S. East Coast and Paris, fans can watch most events live each morning and afternoon on NBC. The network will rebroadcast the day’s big contests during prime-time coverage each night.

Six current or former Hoos, including Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh and Alex Walsh, are hoping to swim to success in Paris, with several swimmers hitting the water this weekend. Preliminaries for the women’s 400-meter freestyle, 4x100-meter freestyle relay and 100-meter butterfly are scheduled for Saturday morning.

UVA rising senior Gretchen Walsh, the current world record holder in the 100-meter butterfly, will face tough competition, with six of eight finalists from Tokyo returning. Former Cavalier Paige Madden hopes to add to her medal count, starting with the 400-meter freestyle. Madden won a silver medal in Tokyo in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay.

On Sunday morning, current Hoo Emma Weber makes her Olympic debut in the 100-meter breaststroke. Weber upset reigning Olympic champion Lydia Jacoby at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Indianapolis. Also Sunday morning, current UVA swimmer Aimee Canny, swimming for South Africa, hopes to earn a spot in the finals of the 200-meter freestyle. Canny was the ACC Women’s Freshmen of the Year in 2023.

Finals in these events will be held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Tennis fans will see red (clay) as the historic Roland-Garros Stadium prepares to host Olympic matches. Once again, UVA will be well represented, with Danielle Collins and Emma Navarro making their Olympic debuts playing for Team USA in the women’s singles.

First-round play gets underway Saturday with Collins, seeded No. 8 in the Olympic tournament, facing Germany’s Laura Siegemund, and Navarro, seeded No. 11, taking on Austria’s Julia Grabher.
