The 2021 Final Exercises offered a hopeful conclusion to one of the most unusual and difficult academic years in the University of Virginia’s 200-year history.
This year’s celebrations were different, as the world continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, but they also were triumphant, as students from the Classes of 2020 and 2021 reflected and celebrated their accomplishments in the classroom and beyond.
Both classes began with the traditional procession down the Lawn from the Rotunda. New this year, the celebrations for the Class of 2021 ended with degree conferral ceremonies in Scott Stadium (degrees for the Class of 2020 were conferred last spring), in order to adhere to state directives on the sizes of graduation gatherings because of the pandemic.
Here, learn more about the celebrations, see photos and video from events from each day, and meet some of the University’s newest graduates.
