The hiring of one of the game’s legends to coach the Cavaliers earned acclaim from all across the world of women’s basketball.

A year after having their hearts broken on “Selection Monday,” members of the UVA women’s basketball team celebrated their inclusion in this year’s NCAA Tournament – their first berth since 2010. First up: the University of California, on Friday at 5 p.m.

While the Cavaliers have posted some major accomplishments this season, “We have a lot more to prove,” All-ACC guard Kyle Guy said. They will open NCAA play late Friday night.

When it arrives in Brooklyn, New York, for the ACC tournament early next month, the University of Virginia men’s basketball team will do so as the No. 1 seed.

The last official game played at UVA’s baseball stadium took place on May 16. The ballpark’s transformation since then has been “almost unprecedented,” head coach Brian O’Connor said.

George Welsh has been on both sides of the ledger in UVA’s Dec. 28 Military Bowl matchup with Navy. When he retired from coaching in 2000, he was the winningest coach in the history of both schools.

Head coach Bronco Mendenhall said playing in the Dec. 28 Military Bowl gives his team a chance to build momentum going into the offseason.

Dec. 8 will be his last day on the job as UVA’s athletic director, but Littlepage plans to remain connected to both the University and the Charlottesville community.

As the Cavaliers prepare for a new season, Diane is watching with pride from the Darden School, where he is preparing for a new season of his own career.

Carla Williams, once a first-generation college student, has worked her way to three degrees and through a variety of roles to earn her place as the first female African-American athletic director at one of the “Power Five” conference schools.
